I took this down after typing it because I thought there was no need to say it, but it turns out there is!
This is the situation. Student's parents keep pressing me urgently for a tuition teacher who can teach THREE science subjects. And they called me WHILE I WAS AT WORK. Hello, I'm sorry to say this, but your problems are not the biggest in the world.
After trying over a span of several days to contact various friends who are capable of giving good tuition, after negotiating the prices over days, after CONFIRMING the timings and dates with my friend and with them,
this family tells me they don't need the teacher anymore.
Thank you for wasting my time. Again. Not only that, wasting my friend's time.
I'm FUCKING ANGRY.
I've been meaning to say this for the longest time.
With all the greatest respect, I seriously don't understand how come all these parents want the best teachers but refuse to pay up. If you want a teacher from London/Oxbridge you've got to do better than reluctantly agree to pay $25 an hour for tuition, which is truly, truly dirt-cheap in our times.
Not to mention all those months last year I spent labouring 6 hours at a time on $20 an hour. I actually fell sick the whole of 2009 because of this sort of overwork. I mean, I did it because I felt responsible for the student. All the same, it's still underpaying. I delivered, but I don't think I got much out of it, and I'm beginning to feel extremely exploited.
Where else could you have found another teacher like me? I worked 9 hours a week every week for 9 months, with 6 hours blocks of work in a row! I could have walked off at any point, that was how frustrated, harrassed and tired I was. $20 an hour was RIDICULOUS considering I was teaching three subjects.
So now these people are taking me for granted already.
I'm
not a one-stop resource for everything. So some people should understand and stop expecting me to provide everything that they can afford to buy lots of from anywhere because they're so well-off. When I was a student, okay, I can deal with that sort of stuff while being underpaid. Now when I'm working everyday, NO. Go away.
I'm becoming accustomed to these people who only look for you when they have problems that they want you to help with.
I care about my students but it's very tiring after having to deal with years of this sort of soul-sucking. I have my own life too you know. Don't expect me to do everything.
And now this money issue is getting transferred to my friends whom I'm supposed to recommend to you for $25 an hour (HUH?!) to teach MATH PHYSICS AND CHEM? I'm not going to find such a teacher for you. Please find one for yourself because no one will take up this offer. Unless they're desperate for a work permit.
I'm going to wash my hands off this tuition thing. And subsequently this entire family.
