The last birthday before I go out into the workforce.

Somehow this is not even a little daunting to me. I suppose I've been waiting for this for a long time. Now all that remains is to send out my resumes and prep myself for interviews and then the long climb upwards.

During the long climb this blog might or might not be defunct, considering the best way to get yourself fired is to blog about work.

I went to the Career Fair 2010 yesterday and talked quite a bit with the people from NAC, MFA, Credit Suisse, IE Singapore and NTUC income.

I don't know why everyone seems to be encouraging me to enter the government, particularly the MOE. As I've stated yesterday, I'd rather be a prostitute than enter the service of the Ministry of Education.

I suppose it is rather unfair to give such a low value to the MOE, considering I know tons of brilliant MOE scholar friends. And I know most of the MOE scholars will run to other organisations the moment their bond is complete. Unfortunately I also know tons of lazy and unmotivated people joining MOE who wouldn't be able to get a job elsewhere if they tried looking. In fact, I've lost count of the number of times I heard people tell me 'I'm joining the MOE because it is a 'safe option', or 'because I feel safer staying in academia'.

What that actually translates to is,
  • I'm afraid to go out there and look for a job where there is a possibility of getting rejected.
  • I'm afraid of the competition among colleagues that will present itself in other jobs.
  • I'm unmotivated to look for a job and MOE will definitely take me the moment I apply
  • I want a stable job that is easy. 'Easy' meaning that you don't have ANY risk of getting fired, because as we all know, MOE does not retrench you, no matter how rubbish you are, unless you molest children or something.

It's about time MOE got its act together and stop hiring reprobates who didn't even get CCC for their A levels, or are unable string a sentence together in a single language. In many ways, MOE is becoming the new SAF, looking at their hiring and quality control standards. People who wouldn't be given a second glance in the private sector hiring rounds would be welcomed with open arms at these two organisations.

I wonder if MOE's hiring standards has always been like this. Or is this a new generation of leeches which just want to stick to the biggest animals, and not try for a job that will really challenge and determine their true worth?

Little wonder that Raffles Girls' Secondary had to set up a booth at the Career Fair in NUS yesterday, instead of sourcing for teachers from the MOE.

So yep, people should stop asking me to the join the MOE, because that is beyond my last option.
